In Korea, the concepts of the past, present, or tradition and modern are commonly used but no easily interpreted topics and words. The artist has also thoughts and worked on the concepts of modern interpretation of tradition for a long time, drawing pictures from the perspective of the artist’s own language. The author uses the traditional method of painting and coloring under the traditional material of silk, but as you can see in the work the artist’s perspective is the scenes we encounter in our daily lives. The artist wrote down the emotions that were being transferred out of the constraints of time and space, and also recorded the scenery that we were familiar with and what we could see between them. The seemingly fragmented landscapes and buildings are interesting parts of the artist’s work, recording the small changes we face all the time.
Through this exhibition, the artist looked at Dobong-gu with another look, drawing images of the area she had lived in for a long time and gathering scenes from the changing region. The artist, who mainly practices and created the basis of painting through classical works, has also focused on our feelings and eye living in modern society while seeking legitimacy in the process of work. The artist not only acquire the art language of the past by painting the landscape countless times, but also, she frequently climbed Dobong Mountain to capture the image of a city that remains in her own view, and sometimes changed.
The artist proceeded to carve out and combine scenes that were shown intuitively in the order and composition of the work. Through the work of sharing this composition, the artist expressed interestingly the time of tradition and modernity, and the past and present. The artist also uses very delicate lines and concise but sometimes strong colors. Her work, which also shows a certain patter, looked at tradition and modernity on a new level with its order and composition.
As we can see from this exhibition, time can be seen through buildings or through landscapes that look mysterious. In particular, the scene that remains in harmony with the objects of nature and modern buildings shows our society, which is two different, but still coexisting, in the past and present. Some things stay as time passes, while others disappear very naturally. There are some new things that emerge between the things that remain, and they represent a very natural mix, not a contrasting concept between the past and the present. So, the traditional techniques used by the artist and the landscapes we are familiar always come to those who face the painting anew. © Hahn Gee-sun
